About The Wood
What is the wood? Is it sustainable?
We use bangkirai hardwood exclusively for all our structures. It comes from Kalimantan (Borneo) and Sumatra. The Indonesian Government has instituted legislation to develop sustainable guidelines for their forestry industry, in the manner that they have done for the teak industry. We are always on the lookout for sources that are sustainably re-planting.What is the wood quality?
Bangkirai has various grades from A to construction and local quality. We utilize a mixture of grades based upon usage. Example: Exterior siding is A grade and studs utilize construction quality. What are the facts on the termite resistance?
After several tests by the University of Hawaii's entomology laboratory, the results are as follows: on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest resistance, our Bangkirai received a rating of 9.5, almost 100%. Redwood and Cedar received an 8.0 rating.books on gazebo and outdoor structures
Outdoor Shelter Plans: Overheads, Sheds and Gazebos
Be a weekend builder in your own backyard. Here are complete plans for building 15 original outdoor structures, each with step-by-step instructions, detailed drawings, complete materials lists, and time estimates. It also includes helpful photographs, design guidelines, basic construction information, and more.
I found the book to be very helpful. Instructions, drawings and material lists are all very detailed. I have building experience. A novice may want to supplement with a "how to" book that covers techniques and tools. ("How to Build Small Barns & Outbuildings" by Monte Burch. <$13.95 at Amazon.com> is good) What I find disturbing is the price for the used copies of this book, ranging from $28 to $41. New, the book sells for only $9.95!!! Something's very wrong with this picture. But, for some reason, no new copies are for sale here. I wanted to purchase a new copy for my brother. At these rediculous used prices, I think I'll let him borrow mine.
